On Sunday, February 3, 1991, a small Arlington bar on Wilson Blvd loaned its stage to four nervous locals who were making a go in the acoustic music scene: A be-speckled, balding young folkie with John Denver frames, a goatee-sporting long-haired beginning bongo player, a fashion-disaster of a 25-year-old trying to make jokes about President Wilson to work the local landmarks and connect with the crowd, and a lovely novice diva VA Tech grad weighted down with casts on each wrists from an earlier ice skating accident....... Good Gravy, it's Julie, Mike, Eddie & Robbie -- whodduthunk?! The night was unbelievable and the set list was quite forgettable. The room was filled with enough family, roommates and friends, that the club actually let the quartet off with just paying their bar tab (they were given a pass on the dish washing). This said night marked the very first performance of the band now known as Eddie from Ohio. The first song of the set was "Eight Miles High" and the music magically spiralled downward from there. Since then, every February 3, Mike speaks up to his three chums "Hey guys, it's our anniversary!" They grumble in response and go back to sleep because it's usually about 4 AM. Well, enough about us. Actually, that's what these e-blasts are all about...soooo.. back to us. January was quite a month. Robbie had a successful New Years batch of shows at Jammin Java. A week later Mike had a stellar 40th bday weekend while releasing his Eddie-produced solo CD at the same venue, and Julie unveiled her beautiful dome for all to see at two of the three sellout EFO shows at the Birchmere (sorry, Friday, she wasn't quite in the zone yet). As for Julie and her continued butt-kicking battle against breast cancer, she has begun her second round of chemo (the first and toughest round is now over). This second round is on a weekly basis with milder side effects -- just a lot of fatigue on the day-of due to the Benadryl. She certainly appreciates all the warm wishes and thanks you from the bottom of her heart. She's currently catching all the Best Picture nominees before Oscar time. Her hunch is a Brokeback Mountain sweep with Best Actor nod going to the Capote guy. The Russell Crowe dis left her gobsmacked. Her husband took her to one of the final performances of "Les Miserables" at DC's National Theater. A friend in the cast got her backstage after the show, where she met the fellow who played Jean-Val Jean and proceeded to ooh and aah over him. When Jean-Val Jean realized who she was, he began to sing Hey Little Man to her. She immediately passed out and was revived with smelling salts. Three great shows this month: One night at The Williamsburg Library (The Dewey Decibel Series, which actually got its name because of an onstage remark by EFO) and two nights at Annapolis MD's RamsHead Tavern. Be sure to get tickets in advance, these rooms always sellout in advance. Details below MICHAEL RELEASES HIS FIRST SOLO CD After 15 years with EFO, and 40 years on the planet, EFO bassist/guitarist/vocalist/baldie Michael Clem has released his first solo CD, "1st & 40" Produced by bandmate Eddie Hartness, "1st & 40" is a collection of 11 new originals by Clem. This CD will be available at shows and on the Internet only. The release show on January 6 was stupendous (The Washington Post review is posted at his website and is also laminated so he can wear it around his neck).
